Marrying Medicine with Music

Reghardt Kühn started his music career in high school, learning piano, euphonium, and trombone. He won the South African Marching Band Championships twice as part of the Empangeni Marching Band and formed part of the Kwa-Zulu Natal Youth Orchestra for three years as euphonist and trombonist.

In 2010 he started studying music at Stellenbosch University. He began his career as conductor, studying orchestral conducting under the guidance of Romanian conductor Prof. Corvin Matei, the resident conductor for the Stellenbosch University Symphony Orchestra. Reghardt has also ventured into the world of choral conducting with Prof. Martin Berger, having conducted the Landesjugendchor Brandenburg in 2013. Reghardt finished his BMus degree at Stellenbosch University in 2013, specialising in composition under the tutelage of Prof. Hans Roosenschoon. He finished his MMus in orchestral conducting in 2019 under the tutelage of Prof. Corvin Matei.

Reghardt has taken part in various festivals such as the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival as trombonist and conductor. He has received trombone masterclasses from the Metropolitan Opera’s Weston Sprott; participated in the first conducting workshop hosted by the SA National Youth Orchestra and the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra with Julliard School of Music’s James Ross. Reghardt has received several master classes from conductors such as Victor Yampolsky, Arjan Tien, Daniel Boico, Daniel Raiskin, Joost Smeets and Evgeny Bushkov.

Reghardt plays trombone in ad hoc ensembles and orchestras, and is a founding member of the Stellenbosch City Orchestra. He finished as finalist of 4th triennial Len van Zyl Conductors Competition in 2018/2019. In 2016 Reghardt was appointed as assistant conductor of the University of Stellenbosch Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and In 2014 he was appointed as the resident conductor of the Stellenbosch University Medical Orchestra, the first of its kind in South Africa.
